Drogheda United took a significant step towards Premier Division safety with a 2-0 home victory over Sligo Rovers at Sullivan and Lambe Park. Goals from Warren Davis and Edwin Agbaje before half-time secured a key three points that lifts the club to 34 points from 31 games, eight clear of their visitors in the relegation battle. This win marks a second consecutive victory, following last weekend's 2-1 result against Shelbourne, and sets them up for a key fixtures this Friday away to third-placed Bohemians.

Kevin Doherty’s side now sit ninth in the standings, ten points behind eighth-placed Waterford with just 18 points left to play for this season. The manager acknowledged the high stakes for his players in the final stretch. "For those two, the next six games will define their years and more besides," Doherty said, referencing the importance of the remaining fixtures.

Davis and Agbaje deliver

The opening goal arrived in bizarre fashion in the 38th minute. Sligo goalkeeper Sam Sergeant claimed a Drogheda corner and attempted to launch a quick counter-attack, but he slipped while kicking the ball. It fell to Warren Davis, who curled a first-time shot from 35 yards into the unguarded net. It was Davis's sixth goal of the campaign across 34 appearances, underlining his growing influence.

Drogheda doubled their lead in first-half stoppage time through Edwin Agbaje. The forward, who previously played for Sligo, muscled defender Seb Quirk off the ball, turned past two more challenges, and curled a superb finish into the top corner for his second senior career goal. Thomas Oluwa and Davis both forced saves from Sergeant after the break, but the damage was already done.

Sligo's struggles deepen

For Sligo Rovers, managed by Darren Purse, the defeat leaves them marooned at the bottom and staring at a first relegation in 22 years. They have not won a league match since May, a run now stretching to 12 games. Purse lost two more players to injury during the match, with Jack Shorrock substituted after colliding with a floodlight box and Trey George also forced off, adding to their growing injuries concerns. Mark Doyle was already suspended.

"Another defeat leaves them approaching miracle territory in their relegation battle," Purse admitted afterwards. His side made a change at half-time, bringing on Kaiyne Woolery and Luke Young for Archie Meekison and James McManus, but they rarely threatened. Their best chance fell to Cian Kavanagh, whose low shot was comfortably saved by Drogheda goalkeeper Luke Dennison.

Squad stretched for Drogs

The win continues a positive run for Drogheda, who have now won two consecutive league games following their 2-1 victory over Shelbourne last weekend. The defensive unit of Leo Burney, Conor Keeley, and Andrew Quinn held firm, supported by midfielders Alfie Bates, Ethan O'Brien, and Conor Kane. Doherty’s options were limited, however, with Ryan Brennan and Kieran Cruise the only senior outfield players on a bench that also included 15-year-old Charlie Cummins.

Late substitutions saw Brandon Kavanagh replaced by Ryan Brennan, Davis by Ryan Markey, and the goalscorer Agbaje by Kieran Cruise as the hosts saw out the game. The result provides a massive confidence boost ahead of a difficult trip to face third-placed Bohemians this Friday.
